William James was a philosopher who studied the subjects of physiology, psychology and philosophy. William James influenced many men who grew up and became great original thinkers, such as Edmund Husserl, Bertrand Russell, John Dewey, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. He was considered the father of American physiology.
Biography
January 11, 1842- August 26, 1910.In his early life he and his siblings attended private schools, because their parents, Henry and Mary James, especially his father, were interested in philosophy and theology and wanted to give their children the best education that a child could get.In 1861 James started to attend the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard.Then, in 1864 James entered the Harvard School of Medicine.Lastly in his education, in 1867-1868, he travels to Europe and studied physiology at Berlin University.In 1869 he finally receives his M.D. degree.1874-1875 he established the very first American psychology laboratory.1878 he married Alice Gibbens. In 1910 William James passes on to the Philosophy school in the sky.
Philosophy
William James developed a philosophical system called "Pragmatic Epistemology" , it considers mainly the meaning of ideas and truths of beliefs but not abstractly. He explored the implications of this theory in areas of religious beliefs, metaphysics, human freedoms and moral values and social philosophy.
